The Story of the Fig House
Before there was a "Fig House," there was simply a family living here.
Kids were growing up here. Life was happening here.
And if you have children, a demanding career, a busy schedule, or honestly just a life, you probably know exactly what that can look like.
The house itself had so much going for it. Beautiful architectural details. Great natural light. Warm wood floors. Character.
But like so many family homes, this one had evolved around everyday life.

But when I looked at the house, I could see beyond what was immediately in front of me.
I noticed the warmth of the wood floors. The character of the beams. The fireplace. The natural light. The proportions of the rooms.
I could see a version of the home that felt warmer, more intentional and more connected, while still feeling like somewhere real life could happen.
As I began layering the rooms with furniture, art, texture and thoughtful details, those possibilities started to become visible.
The architecture hadn't changed.
The rooms hadn't gotten bigger.
But somehow, you noticed them differently.
You could imagine gathering around the dining table. Curling up in the living room. Making dinner in the kitchen. Having friends over. Spending an ordinary Tuesday night at home.
It felt beautiful, but it also felt livable.
And about that name.
Just outside was a mature fig tree, heavy with fruit. I loved that little connection to the property so much that I brought some of the figs inside and incorporated them into the styling.
Somewhere along the way, I started calling it the Fig House.
But the figs aren't really what made this project stay with me.
It was seeing just how much possibility had been there all along.
And when I looked back at the original photos afterward, I kept thinking about the family who had lived there and all of the life that had happened within those walls.
They hadn't failed to make their house beautiful.
They had been busy living in it.
And I think that's true for so many of us.
Our homes evolve right alongside our lives. We move in with intentions for what we'll eventually do, and then real life starts filling the space between those intentions.
Work gets busy. Families grow. Priorities change. Years pass.
Meanwhile, the home we once imagined creating can slowly become the home we keep meaning to get around to.
That's what the Fig House reminded me of.
Sometimes the potential is already there. We just need help seeing it and bringing it to life.
And eventually, trying to do that on our own can start to feel less exciting than it once did.
There comes a point when decorating your home stops feeling fun…
…and starts feeling like another job.
